About the WI
The Women's Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation's aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK. The WI celebrated its centenary in 2015 and currently has almost 220,000 members in approximately 6,300 WIs.
The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.
The National Federation of WIs (NFWI) is a charity set up to represent members across the UK. At a regional level, there are 69 federations across the UK and Hardwick belongs to the Cambridge Federation of WIs (CFWI).
For more information about the NFWI, please visit the website: www.thewi.org.uk

About the Hardwick WI
The Hardwick WI was formed in 1958 so celebrated its 60th birthday in 2018. We celebrated this with a dinner at St John's College which was enjoyed by the majority of our members.
We are a welcoming and active group, embedded in the Hardwick village community. We currently have 43 members of varying ages and interests. Many of our members are involved in other groups and organisations within the village. We like to take part in village events such as the school carnival, Christmas bazaar, participating in the decoration of a church window at St Mary's Harvest Festival and the Christmas Tree Festival. We also raise money for charity, especially Breast Cancer Care, by organising the annual Strawberry Tea. We enjoy our monthly meetings which, as can be seen on our programme, are varied. We also enjoy activities outside our monthly meetings which are organised by the committee. These have included theatre trips, a river cruise, a visit to the panto, winter lights at Anglesey Abbey to name a few. Sometimes even husbands and partners are welcome!
